Unconventional York Scientist does Sports Relief Dragon’s DenThis unique sports cap enables the wearer to undertake sports and outdoor pursuits without their glasses becoming dislodged. Dr Kam, 42, a former theoretical physicist, who has also worked in nuclear fusion, quantum physics and computational electromagnetics and is founder of Inclusive Innovations Ltd, developed the iiCAP because, as a glasses wearer, he was unable to find a suitable solution to hold his glasses in place. Unlike the traditional method of securing glasses with a band across the back of the head, Dr Kam’s iiCAP is the only product on the market that makes wearing glasses for sport activities a comfortable experience. The spectacle stabilising system does not increase contact pressure to the nose and it simultaneously reduces weight and stabilises the wearer’s glasses. The iiCAP has special embedded Velcro-like fabric designed into the underside of the peak that allows the wearer to place the spectacle stabilising system anywhere around the rim, so one size fits all. In this special edition of Dragons Den comedian Jason Manford (www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden) demonstrated this deceptively simple and very effective sporting aid to the Dragons. Jason did his best to convince the surly Dragons of the iiCAP’s benefits. Unfortunately, Dr Kam did not receive any offers but he remains buoyant about the iiCAP’s potential. “Participating in Dragon’s Den was great experience”; said Dr Kam after the show, “I’m now in talks with a major sporting company in Lancashire to develop the iiCAP and at the recent Venturefest event, held at York Racecourse, I received a lot of interest and sold a number of iiCAPs to the event’s visitors and there has been an increase of hits on my website (www.iicap.co.uk ) from where the cap can be purchased.” This is not Dr Kam’s first time on Dragon’s Den, in 2005 he presented his Reminder Smart Card concept that alerts the patient of an imminent appointment, potentially saving the NHS about £250 million a year by reducing missed appointments. The device could also be used as an assistive technology product for the elderly or people with impaired memory. Unfortunately, he did not receive investment from the Dragons but the tenacious Dr Kam managed to secure support and the card was trialled in 2009. Dr Kam continues to seek investment support for his products and although the Dragons decided not to help Kin with his iiCAP project his intuition tells him that his iiCAP is definitely a winner - maybe one day soon it will be worn by many sports winners. As Einstein, who was Kin’s boyhood hero, said “The only real valuable thing is intuition." Article Id: 305899 |
